Concept and Definition of Leadership
Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of a group of individuals for achieving the desired goals in given situations. Thus, the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or ability to do this is called leadership. It is the ability to guide, direct or influence people. Leadership involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with others so that they can follow it willingly, providing the information, knowledge, and methods to realize that vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicting interest of all members and stakeholders.
Leadership is inevitable where a group of people workes together attainment of a common goal.
There are a host of definitions of leadership coined by various authorities. A few of them are as follows:
According to Alford and Beatty, "Leadership is the ability to secure desirable actions from a group of followers voluntarily without the use of coercion."
Koontz and Donnell observe, "Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce subordinates (followers) to work with confidence and zeal."
